It seems like everyone that discusses Volume Two, the upcoming She and Him album, begin their statement with a discussion about not buying into their music right away (I too am guilty). I think people have a hard time accepting M. Ward’s collaboration with the cutesy actress Zooey Deschanel as a serious effort. After all the stench is still lingering from Pete Yorn’s collaboration with Scarlett Johansson.
I think the real sticking point for most people is the absolute positivity and upbeat nature of She and Him’s vintage tunes. At first it’s almost too much, our cynicism kicks into overdrive. After a few listens though it’s fun just to enjoy the feel-good tunes of a bygone era. Take a listen to the album in its entirety over at NPR Music’s Exclusive First Listen (out 3/23 via Merge).
While you’re at NPR’s Music Site you might also want to take a listen to Under Great White Northern Lights, the new live album/DVD out today from The White Stripes. Check it out here.
