I have to admit Julian Casablancas surprised the hell out of me this year.  I enjoyed The Strokes and I’ve enjoyed the solo efforts put forth by Albert Hammond Jr. and Fabrizio Moretti (Little Joy). 

Sitting back watching the musical landscape change before him Julian Casablancas remained in the shadows, while his band-mates showed off their chops.  By the time I heard about his upcoming LP Phrazes For The Young I was intrigued, but I wasn’t drooling over it.  Once I heard “11th Dimension” I was more confused than anything. 

I mean here’s the lead singer of The Strokes putting out an eight song synth-heavy album, high in production value.  This album could have been a train-wreck, but instead Casablancas shows that sometimes using all of the bells and whistles at your disposal pays off.
